Double Whirlpools Found Spinning Across Hundreds of Miles in the Ocean Seen for the First Time

Updated | A double whirlpool, an ocean phenomenon also known as a smoke ring, has stayed together for longer than ever previously observed. The pair of eddies was discovered spinning across the Tasman Sea off the southwest of Australia and in the South Atlantic, west of South Africa. It traveled about 1,000 miles in six months—around 5.5 miles a day, Chris Hughes, lead author and sea level science professor at the University of Liverpool, told Newsweek by email. read more
